It seems like the seasonal beers, much like other seasonal merchandise, keep getting released earlier and earlier. Its still winter for at least another month, yet all of my favorite winter seasonals, like Deschutes Jubelale or even the Pyramid Snow Cap are becoming hard to find. They're already being replaced by spring beers, lots of browns and even an “Amber Lager” from Pyramid.

The Sierra Nevada ESB (Early Spring Beer) is damn tasty. Bought it on a whim tonight.  Its roughly described as a West Coast interpretation of an English style bitter. Lots of hoppiness, more hop aroma than taste. The maltiness is more like English beers.

I'd describe it as lawn mower beer compared to the winter beers I'm still craving, during “early spring” above the 45th parallel, I want a darker beer until at least March.

I love the use of the ESB initials.  Hey, have you tired the Bachelor ESB by Deschutes?

I'm not having any luck finding Deschutes.  Seems I'll have to fly out for a visit…

Lots of brewers out here have been taking liberty with the name “ESB,” Laurelwood brews a batch of Elvis's Special Bitter every year on his birthday.

The Deschutes ESB is pretty good. Distribution is weird on that particular Deschutes beer, so when I find a place that sells six packs, I always have to buy one. When I find myself at the pub downtown, the ESB is my go-to beer if none of the seasonals sound good.

Bridgeport is another Portland brewery that makes a pretty good ESB. Their IPA is good too, an excellent session IPA, if your tongue can handle that sort of thing.

I love that the phrase “session beer” has become a polite way of saying, “you can get shit-faced on this stuff and not feel too bad the next day.”

Grabbed the Sierra Nevada ESB this weekend — hoping to drink it this week!
