Highland Brewing Oatmeal Porter

Posted by: Andy Murphy | Comments (2)

highland oatmeal porter2Just three more beers remain in my North Carolina Beer Week sponsored by reader Kevin, whose selections for today and tomorrow include two dark beers from Highland Brewing Company in Asheville.

The Highland motto is “just a wee bit different”, and this beer’s name is a nice example. Though oatmeal stouts abound on the beer market, I’ve never come across an oatmeal porter before. The name conjures to mind a creamy, smokey, sweetly-roasted ale — but I’m ready to stop imagining and start tasting.

The Duck-Rabbit Milk Stout

Posted by: Andy Murphy | Comments (3)

duck rabbit milk stout label detailI’ve been looking forward to drinking today’s beer, a Milk Stout from The Duck-Rabbit Craft Brewery in Farmville, NC. The Duck-Rabbit logo is a kicker (more on that later), and the subtitle on the label describes the brewery as “The Dark Beer Specialist”.

Before I go any further, let me take another moment to thank reader Kevin for making this North Carolina Beer Week possible. Your selections have been quite excellent, and I’m enjoying this leisurely tour of laid-back southern style.

Kevin’s selection for today is described on The Duck-Rabbit website as follows:

The Duck-Rabbit Milk Stout is a traditional full-bodied stout brewed with lactose (milk sugar). The subtle sweetness imparted by the lactose balances the sharpness of the highly roasted grains which give this delicious beer its black color.

Bad Penny Brown Ale

bad penny detailThe second day of my North Carolina Beer Week is a real winner thanks to Bad Penny Brown Ale from Big Boss Brewing Company.

This beer stood out immediately thanks to its funky label. In fact, I half expected to open the bottle and release the musical theme from Shaft.

Carolina Pale Ale

Posted by: Andy Murphy | Comments (1)

CBCPale1Today, I break with my IPA Monday tradition to start a week of North Carolina beers. Monday through Saturday I’ll be drinking beers from the great state of North Carolina — a week made possible by reader Kevin, who sponsored each of these small batch bottles.

Kevin will share some of his thoughts on these beers in the comments all week. And for everyone else, if you are in North Carolina or have access to these beers, I want to encourage you to share your reviews and ask questions or get beer recommendations from the pros reading along in NC.

We start with a Pale Ale from Carolina Brewing Company. My hopes are high, because a quick perusal of their website reveals the team members at Carolina Brewing have been at this for 14 years. They describe themselves as “Brewers of Tasty Liquids”, a phrase which captures that curious crossroad between “magical” and the “kind of creepy”.

Since there’s a lion on the label, I’ll lean toward the magical.

North Carolina Beer Week

Posted by: Andy Murphy | Comments (0)

The rumors of my demise… Well, I’m sure you know the rest.

My vacation coincided with some great personal news that prompted me to refocus my time — I’ve hardly even booted my computer over the past few weeks! It’s been refreshing, and I’ve kept up with my one-a-day ritual, but I need to get back to writing.

To that end, let me introduce “North Carolina Beer Week”.

BeerADay.net reader Kevin (@zy1125) helped me obtain a fine supply of North Carolina brews. I’ll be drinking these beers Monday through Sunday — if you’re in North Carolina or have a good NC beer supply, I invite you to drink along!
